On the Job

job.jpgSo one month has passed since my job began at Church of the Advent in Nashville. My official title is “Deacon in Training.” If you were wondering what my job would look like, well, that should make it clear.

Here is what I do. I’m in charge of youth ministry, young adult ministry, and some hospital visitation. And I preach every other week. I also have a few other responsibilities.

Advent is an average sized church in the Episcopal world. About a hundred and fifty people show up on Sundays. So it is small enough that I should be able to handle all these responsibilities.

That is Debby in the picture. She was the first person ever that I visited in the hospital as clergy. Luckily she is our friend and let me experiment on her. She also let us take her picture. Thank you Debby.

One of the great things about my job is that I get Fridays off. That means I have started playing golf again. One of the first things my new boss asked was, “Do you play golf?” Then he told me, “You should. I’ve played golf on my day off my whole career. It is a great stress reliever.” So I started playing golf again.

Another great thing about my job is the free lemonade. Every Sunday I get free lemonade in between services. Mmm. Lemonade.

Finally, I get a stapler and my very own roll of scotch tape. I’ve been finding many fun games to play with these, like wrapping people in scotch tape and then stapling Bible verses to their bodies.

Next time you are in town you should come visit us on Sunday mornings. Let us know that you are coming and we’ll make sure to let you handle the special snakes when we get to that part of the service.
