lost_saints.jpgRecently our Nashville friend Nate Ragan saw Chris Seay (of Ecclesia Church in Houston) say on Twitter, “Any friends in Hawaii willing to help me with a secret mission related to The Gospel According to LOST?” Since we live in Hawaii, Nate forwarded this message to us. We had no idea what it meant. But Chris is rather famous in the Christian world (we used his Advent Conspiracy study this year at church) so we figured it would at least be fun to contact him and possibly meet him. We ended up driving him and his videographer, Ryan, around the island. We stopped at the Pali Overlook and Kalama Beach where they got some shots. We also ate a delicious lunch at Chao Praya Thai.

The videos were going to promote his book, The Gospel According to LOST, the whole reason they were in town. Why now? The final season of the show LOST was beginning, and the producers aired the world premiere here in Waikiki on January 31. The majority of the movie was filmed here, so it made sense.

We attended the LOST premiere separately, and ended up running into our friend from a board game group that we frequent. He scored a nice spot slightly away from the crowd and allowed us to join him for the viewing! Waikiki was absolutely packed. People were crowded into every little spot of sand or sidewalk. We watched the red carpet for a little while and saw Hurley, Richard, and Frank arrive. It was pretty fun to see it in that setting and get the inside scoop that John Locke…. [censored]…. before the rest of the world knew!

The next night we met up with Chris and Ryan and they treated us to some excellent sushi, which we got at half price for being locals. Definitely not a normal weekend. Just one of the random things that happens to you if you live in Hawaii I guess.

Honolulu City Lights

This year is the 25th Anniversary of Honolulu City Lights. It is a section of the government area where they set up cheesy Christmas displays and light tons of trees, including a 50 foot one. The big attraction is the Shaka Santa. The whole thing is a little kitschy but we enjoyed being downtown at night and Autumn loved running on the lawns and pointing. So it was a success!

8th Anniversary

Anniv.09_020_thumb.JPGWe celebrated our 8th anniversary yesterday! We had such a great time. A friend from church took Autumn for the afternoon and we went out on the town. First we wanted to go to several galleries and look at art. This is something I hesitate to do with a toddler. Just something about a little person who drools on things that seems incompatible with art.

We hit up the art district at the edge of Chinatown and saw a lot of local artists and a lot of Hawaiian/beach art. We tend to like minimalist, non-representational art so most of the Hawaii stuff didn’t suit us. But there were several things that did. There was painting at the Pegge Hopper Gallery that we liked, by Stephen Little. I heard his name in my Museums Studies class when the assistant director of the Honolulu Academy of Arts came to speak. Little is the director of the Academy and he apparently just had his first show there last month. His piece we liked was REALLY minimalistic, just a few ink strokes on canvas. But something about it was very striking.

After the Chinatown galleries we grabbed an espresso at the Downtown Coffee shop and headed to the Hawaii State Art Museum, which was on the 2nd floor of a beautiful white European-style building right in downtown. They had some great Hawaiian and Asian artists, and a whole special exhibit on hula. In the back there was a hands-on section (for kids or people like us) to make some art of your own. We did.

Then we drove down to dinner at the Yardhouse in Waikiki, where they boast 100 draft beers. I got a Lost Coast Downtown Brown and a Youngs Chocolate Stout (and a Turkey Club), and Clayton got a Franziskaner Hefe-Dunkel and a Rogue beer that was really bitter (and a Thai Spice Pizza). Fun!

We then took a leisurely stroll on the beach in Waikiki. It was dark and all the lights of the city were really pretty. I had to remind myself that we are so lucky to spend our anniversary in Hawaii. So many people want that, and we just happened to be here for it! So we enjoyed the time on the beach. We also stopped in several shops my sister Mary would love: Cartier, Fendi, etc. It was funny to act interested in handbags when really they just all looked like diaper bags.

We finished the evening with a take out order from Cheesecake factory, sitting on a glitzy hotel patio complete with a gold and white Christmas tree. It was nice to talk and relax, enjoy the scenery, and just get away. Lovely anniversary.

candle_nut_012_thumb.JPGIt’s funny the ways people find our website.  We recently got an email from a professor at a Germany university.

I like your experiment with the candle nuts. Since I am a chemist and could use your pics in my lecture, could you please provide me with the pics in high resolution (especially the burning nut). You also could try to pull a wick through a nut for making it better burn, it is said, that has been done by the people in the South Seas.
Greetings, Aloha

Of course we sent them.  It’s nice to know that Chemistry students in Germany will be enriched by our burning candle nuts.
